I landed an amazing job after graduating.my present to myself was a nice pc I built. A present I received from the amazing SO was a driving force wheel.

I'm getting windows running today. I know iracing is the de facto , but is a monthly payment.I can swing that, but is it worth it?

Should I try other games, or just go to iracing? Convince me!

I wouldn't say iRacing is the de facto, it has its good points and its bad points. Here's a comparison I wrote on another forum a little while ago.

GTR2 has the absolute best AI I've seen in any simulation, making Single Player racing really fun. Similarly, GTL has similar AI yet uses historical race cars at modern tracks, it's really something different to run and a lot of fun. rFactor has the open-endedness to run absolutely any car at absolutely any track, there's some obscure stuff out there that's ridiculously fun (Ford Escort Mk2 Rallycross cars at Ingliston comes to mind), plus it's easy to go between hot lapping and full-on racing with a multiplayer server full of people. iRacing has laser scanned tracks and "Cad-accurate" cars, hourly races for every class, it's really the best for pick-up online racing. Race 07 has the best hands-down Touring Car racing of any sim, with a really good AI (though not quite as good as GTR2), it's really rewarding to throw the Touring Cars around a track like in the BTCC/WTCC. Project Cars has a very wide variety of cars and tracks from many locations and series, lots of road-based cars, open wheel cars, and prototype cars from many different years, in addition to many historical tracks and modern-day versions of tracks. Assetto Corsa has a good physics base and some unique cars and tracks, it's definitely Italian-biased but it gives a different offering than other things out there right now.

Do your research as to what's out there, IMO you'd be a fool to jump right into iRacing without looking at anything else.

Simraceway is free to start and not that bad, but you have to pay for each new car save for the one(s) they give you.

Worth a try at least...

thanks! Perfect. Only problem now is I'm super confused.

I'm looking for realism, generally will want to race gt cars like corvettes, though I like the occasional formula or proto car, e30 m3, etc.

Also really need a community big enough that I can find a race quickly any time of day.

Research time I guess lol.

See, the problem when people say "realism" is that 99% of the cars people want to drive they have no chance of ever driving, so when people say "that's not realistic! it's far too much grip!" they are basically blowing smoke and being a tool.

Honestly, from your last comment you should get rFactor, grab the EnduRacers mod for all your Prototype and GT needs, and have a blast. It may not be the newest and "greatest" game, but it's solid and will give you a decent racing experience.

Best review I've seen

PC = hundreds, Racing sims = 30-50~ bucks. GET THEM ALL BOY!!!!

Heres the low down;

- For multiplayer action i - racing beats all. It has crappy graphics for scenery, and minimal adjusting you can do on each car / no real modifying. Best organization of leagues

- Project cars is not out yet is suppose to be arcade physics. Upside is it has some cool cars but mostly a butt ton of tracks.

- Assetto Corsa is pretty much the best everyone concludes. My only issue with this game is lack of tracks and multiplayer is just releasing, and probably needs a ton of work to meet i racing or even forza like online play.

You should buy 3 games or you are selling yourself short is my guess.

thanks! I'll look into that a bit more

Also realism I want because I won't ever have the opportunity to drive those cars , I'd get as close as I could that way .

from reading it seems either iracing for online or assetto for overall graphics etc and a bit cheaper .

I'm really looking for online play and iracing seems best?

I'd highly recommend staying away from iRacing, atleast until you get "into" sim racing further. Assetto Corsa is good, as is Project Cars, but I still prefer rFactor just because it's solid and there are so many quality mods that are so, so fun to drive.

You are dead wrong with Project Cars. Yes it still needs works, the devs have shown their development of every car, yet it is moving along and is absolutely not an "arcade" game. There are many elitist trolls who try one car at one track and say the game is crap, don't pass judgement until you've extensively played the game yourself.

rFactor and LFS2 offer some amazing variety of cars. Both are pretty old games, but are still well supported in the community. Both are pretty cheap too.

but does rfactor have good multiplayer? That's what matters a lot to me.

Define good multiplayer. What are you looking for in multiplayer? The service is rock-solid, and for the EnduRacers mod which I'd recommend you getting for your tastes, there are usually several servers up to run in.

I would highly recommend looking at different sim racing communities, racing with people is one thing but in my experience having a community where people genuinely hang out and play around with cars together, not necessarily race every time but run practice laps in groups, is far more fun than a pure no-nonsense race all the time atmosphere.

My definition would be that any time any day I could find a race within 5-10 minutes, for multiple length races (10mins-2hours+). I liked that iracing has repercussions for bad game play and recklessness.

Is rFactor similar to that?

also how is the demo version? Enough to see if I like it? I will definitely try it if the demo is worth the try.

The rFactor demo is the full game with a time limit of 60 minutes, if you want to try it grab the demo and install a few mods in it, as the game is built to be a framework for modding content.

But as I said, do your research. It sounds like you're leaning towards iRacing, and while I can't say your reasoning is quite right, if that's where you're leaning then do it, it's your money (and money, and money, and money, and....) but if it makes you happy then do it.

well I don't like the cost of iRacing, and if I am somewhat misled in why I think iRacing may be best then that's why I asked those more experienced than me.

I do really like the idea of a community that does more than just simply race, but I do like to do a competitive road course with a decent frequency.

I will play the game. I know personally someone who has it (if they weren't 9 hours away I would have tried it). Project cars physics clearly has a problem, It's evident in reviews / videos. This is why there was a backlash amongst people who have helped fund the game, and some people getting their money back. The tracks are not laser scanned, and the developer / affiliates have a bad rep of claiming simulation feel when it is not.

Proj cars has so many tracks with full night and weather. Until learning more about it from actual users in the last couple months, I thought it was definitely the next greatest game. I've been watching it for 2 years. I'd love nothing more than for this game to be incredible and dominate the market, but it's looking like the physics will still be questionable.

How can you judge physics from a video? Until you've had the wheel in your hand, you cannot judge how the cars react. Further, have you seen the list of all the cars in-game and their current "completeness" levels? Not a single car is done yet, there is extensive tire testing going on right now to get each tire where it needs to be, does an "arcade" racer put that kind of effort into their game?

And now to take your comment, what makes "simulation" feel? By definition a simulation is a program that runs a series of equations that are a best-fit for what happens in reality, no? So what about Project Cars is not a "simulation", is it tires? Suspension kinematics? Engine parameters? So again I ask, how can you judge physics from a video?

rFactor2 is looking pretty good too now... So am I correct in assuming the cars that are modded in and such are all free? I may wait until I have a better connection to download the 60 minute demo and test rFactor first before getting invested into something else. It definitely is the easiest to test before buying it.

There's a couple payware mods that are (in my opinion) borderline legal, in the sense that it uses a car's shape and everything but just renames the cars. But for the most part, yeah everything is free.

I don't know about rFactor 2, have never tried it so anything I would say about it are unfounded.

Grab the rFactor demo, then grab EnduRacers ( http://www.enduracers.com/homepage.html ), then go to rFactor Central ( http://rfactorcentral.com/ ) and grab a couple tracks, it'll be well worth trying.

Yeah I will totally agree you have to play it, experiencing it is the only real test. That being said I have done quit a bit of racing with a csr elite / rig. What got me was the letting out initial steering into a corner. The wheel action looked funky not only in the users hands but the virtual wheel on in car view as well. The same track vs. Assetto it was visual easy to tell Assetto was providing that feeling of unwinding the wheel as you track out, project car looked all screwy relative. This was a comparison of the same car the same track in both games. I noticed this issue in other videos as well. I do worry about the fact the tracks aren't laser scanned, that seems lame given the development time of the game. I'd love nothing more to slam a hay bail in a 64 person race, but I'm far from convinced. Have you played P Cars and Assetto? What do you think

Kinja'd!!! tromoly > JDIGGS

Yes, I have both pCars and Assetto Corsa. I didn't play pCars for about 8 months due to school homework and stuff, then picked it up again when I got AC around Christmas and had more time to play, so most my experience has been since then.

Honestly, I like both games. Assetto Corsa has the laser scanned tracks and has really good car models, it's a solid game. Project Cars may not have the laser scanned tracks, but honestly driving Mugello in both games, there isn't much that looks different between the two, it's good in either game. Project Cars is still working on every car so I can't say outright about every car as I could with some cars in Assetto Corsa; in Assetto Corsa every car reacts how you think it would (the E30 can be tail-happy, the X-Bow understeers, etc.), while in Project Cars the farther along cars are getting more and more to where they need to be (Lotus 49 likes to four-wheel drift corners, Sauber C9 likes more speed to feed the Ground Effect tunnels), honestly right now comparing the two is not fair for either sim because there's still so much left for both sims.

So which would I suggest? Both, honestly. Both have their really good points, both have some not-so-great points that are being worked on, and both will just keep getting better and better.

This still gives me some hope for P - Cars. My main thing is I love going to different tracks, so if P cars ends up with really nice physics it will be ultimate for me. I was hoping I would build a new pc and get a new wheel when it's released. Thanks for the info.
